On Wednesday, May 20th, I had the pleasure and most honorable experience attending the 39th annual Gracie Awards held in Beverly Hills, CA at the prestigious Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The Gracies recognize exemplary programming created for women, by women and about women in all facets of media and entertainment, as well as individuals who have made contributions to the industry.
The Gracies are presented by the Alliance for Women (AWM) in Media Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AWM which supports educational programs, charitable activities, public service campaigns and scholarships to benefit the public and women in the media. The Gracie Awards, established in 1975, honor programming and individuals of the highest caliber in all facets of radio, television, cable and web-based media, including news, drama, comedy, public service, documentary and sports.
Hosted by funny girl Aisha Tyler, as women walked on stage to receive their award, the crowd fist-pumped, applauded and roared as the recipients were greeted by musical selections of Alicia Key’s “Girl on Fire” or Katy Perry’s “Roar.” I have never witnessed such excitement, enthusiasm and admiration by women for women – this was truly a moving, hair raising and chilling experience.
Award recipients in attendance (to name a few): Erika Christensen of Universal’s “Parenthood”, Iyanla Vanzant of OWN’s “Fix My Life”, Wanda Sykes of OWN’s “Herlarious”, Christa Miller of TBS’s “Cougar Town”, Angie Harmon of TNT’s “Rizzoli & Isles”, Bellamy Young of ABC’s “Scandal” and many more!
Women were not only honored for their commitment to media, but community, philanthropy and the uplifting and empowerment of other women …
“Women are everywhere and women are doing everything!” ~ Aisha Tyler
“Caring is sexy!” ~ Angie Harmon
“I want to thank women in general … balancing careers and motherhood … Oh my god, it’s hard, so thank you!” ~ Erika Christensen
